Actor Rajinikanth is undergoing treatment for respiratory and gastro-intestinal problems. The Superstar, admitted at the intensive care unit (ICU) of the Sri Ramachandra Medical Centre in Chennai, is responding well to treatment, doctors attending to him said Thursday (19-May-2011).
The actor on Monday (16-May-2011) underwent a minor procedure at the Sri Ramachandra Medical Centre, where doctors removed the excess fluid that had accumulated in his lungs.
"He is in ICU and he is stable," a spokesperson at the Sri Ramachandra Medical Centre (SRMC), where Rajinikanth was admitted on May 13, said on Thursday (May 19) without elaborating.
The 61-year-old actor was shifted to ICU on Wednesday night to improve his breathing pattern.
Meanwhile, ardent fans of the star, presently committed to his period film Rana, are praying their “Thalaivar” (leader) gets well soon and returns home at the earliest.
Special prayers were conducted for the star at places including Madurai, Tircuhirappalli and Tanjore.

Rajini was earlier admitted to hospital on April 29 - the first day of shoot of his new film 'Raana' and then again on May 4.
Industry observers believe the movie - with a projected budget of Rs 150 crore - may have to be shelved if the superstar's health remains critical.

KS Ravikumar the director of Rajinikanth's Rana has pooh-poohed rumours making the rounds that the film has been shelved.
He is quoted by a leading newspaper as saying: "Rana is on. There are no plans to shelve or postpone the film. Reports suggesting otherwise are false."
Ravikumar added that work is going on for the film. He had gone to Thailand to scout locations for the movie.
Ravikumar made it clear: "I will be going to London for further location hunt. Anyway as per the original plans the shoot was to take place only by July end. "
