85 years old Spiritual leader Sathya Sai Baba who has thousands of followers in India and abroad died Sunday (24-Apr-2011) of cardiac and respiratory failure after a prolonged illness.
The orange-robed spiritual leader with a puff of dark hair is considered a living god by his followers in India and overseas.
His followers believe he has supernatural powers. However, critics have accused him of fraud and sexual abuse, allegations he has denied.
The guru claimed to be a reincarnation of Sai Baba of Shirdi, one of India's greatest spiritual figures, who died in 1918.
"Sathya Sai Baba is no more with us physically. He left his body at 7.40 am due to cardiac and respiratory failure," said a statement from the Sathya Sai Baba super-speciality hospital where he had been admitted March 27.
The news of his death plunged his followers, many of whom had thronged the town, into grief.
They also lauded the work done by various institutions set up by the Baba to promote egalitarian values, education and public health.
Congress President Sonia Gandhi also condoled the death of the Baba.
BJP leader LK Advani and Nitin Gadkari, in separate messages, expressed their profound grief and sorrow at the passing away of the Baba.
Bollywood stars, filmmakers and designers joined thousands of devotees in India and abroad in expressing grief at the death of spiritual leader.
